Jeff Tarkowski survived a hard-fought half marathon leg to win the Door County Triathlon Half Ironman event held Sunday at Frank Murphy County Park in Egg Harbor.

“Can I take off my helmet now,” six-year-old Kristofer Lecy pleads with his dad in the driveway of his grandparent’s Fish Creek home. He’s obviously excited to get out from beneath the shell that had sat on his head for most of the past six days. “I forgot I even had it on sometimes,” he explains. The 22nd annual event will take place Saturday, June 19. Fundraising is going “really well” for five employees who are running the Door County Half Marathon on behalf of Scandia Village Good Samaritan in Sister Bay. Nicki Scharrig, Rich Demeuse, Michele Notz, Michelle Stoeckel and Joy Zakrzewski are working to raise $1,500 between them for the retirement home. “This is a gateway park, one that opens people up to the state park system and gets them excited to visit some of the other parks.” Jenny Hadfield of Chicago Endurance Sports and Roy pirRUNg, a USA Track and Field Masters Hall of Famer, have hailed the course as one of the best half marathon courses in the country. Carolyn Smith won Door County’s Fall 50 on Oct. 24 with a time of 6:19:59. Second-place finisher John Storkamp finished a little under 10 minutes behind her with a time of 6:29:08.
